Overview & Highlights

Nestled in the heart of Pittsburgh's Mt. Royal neighborhood, Joe Zeppi's Frozen Treats is an irresistible local gem that ice cream lovers cannot miss. Specializing in classic, nostalgic frozen delights, this charming ice cream shop offers a timeless experience that takes you back to simpler days of hand-scooped homemade ice cream and soft serve goodness. Whether you're craving a rich chocolate soft serve, a refreshing Italian ice, or a luscious gelato, Joe Zeppi’s delivers on quality and flavor with every visit.

What truly sets Joe Zeppi's apart is its heartfelt dedication to tradition — the flavors have remained beautifully consistent over the years, giving longtime patrons like Hailey Dinger a sense of coming home every time they pull up. The shop serves a well-curated weekly menu of soft and hard ice creams, Italian ices (with or without gelato), sundaes, shakes, and floats, ensuring there’s a frozen treat perfect for every palate.

Customers consistently praise the impeccable service paired with friendly smiles and genuine warmth. Kelsey Thornton's story of accommodating cash-only customers by allowing them to run to the ATM reflects the staff’s sincere approach to customer care. This attention to kindness makes the experience feel personal and inviting rather than transactional.

The portions strike a perfect balance — generous enough to satisfy, yet reasonably priced so you can indulge without guilt. DJ Reese’s glowing mention of “decent portions” and the college tip jar shows a welcoming atmosphere that encourages community spirit. Jonathan Cunningham’s fondness for the nostalgic walk-up feel, complemented by a quaint spot to stand or sit by the building, only adds to the shop’s approachable charm.

Joe Zeppi’s is a cash-only establishment, a small quirk that adds to its old-fashioned character rather than detracts from it. You’re not just getting ice cream here; you’re stepping into a beloved neighborhood tradition that keeps summers bright for families and friends year after year.

Whether you’re seeking a quick sweet treat on the go or craving to linger and savor the flavors reminiscent of childhood summers, Joe Zeppi's Frozen Treats offers a delightful, authentic ice cream experience. From the perfectly smooth banana splits to the multitude of toppings that allow you to craft your perfect cone or sundae, every bite is a reminder of why simplicity and quality never go out of style.

For Pittsburgh locals and visitors alike, a stop at Joe Zeppi’s is more than just dessert — it’s a cherished ritual, a celebration of community, and above all, an incredibly satisfying pause on a warm day. Don't miss your chance to enjoy some of the best local ice cream this side of Mt. Royal Boulevard.

Super great ice cream. Friendly staff. Decent portions. Paid with a $20 for 4 people and had room for the college tip jar! Will definitely be back.

Delicious icecream and fast service! The staff were all so kind. We didn’t look online prior to coming so we didn’t know it was cash only, but they allowed us to take our icecream and come back with payment after going to an ATM, which I thought was great customer service! Thanks so much.

The BEST local spot for ice cream. The prices are affordable and the staff is friendly.

It's your usual small ice cream place. The food was good. The personnel were nice. The area to eat ice cream is a bit of an afterthought since most people grab and go. Prices were reasonable.

This was our family favorite back in 2006, 18 years later and it is still great! I love that it has barely changed, it feels like we're coming home every time we pull up. Warning they are CASH ONLY but that just adds to their timelesness! The staff was SUPER friendly, and they got our ice cream out FAST! Give this place a try!

Joe Zeppi's Frozen Treats is a local restaurant that serves a weekly menu of soft and hard ice creams, gelatos, Italian ices, sundaes, shakes, floats, and more. It is cash-only. During my husband's and my visit here, the employees provided excellent service. We really liked our banana split and chocolate soft-serve ice cream.

This was delightful and we can’t wait to return. Reminded me of my grandparents walk up ice cream stand, so definitely felt nostalgic. But still, all three of us got ice cream, two soft serve and one hard dip, and each was good. Just a wonderfully quaint neighborhood spot with solid offerings and reasonable prices. There’s some space on the side of the building to stand/sit and enjoy your treats.

Looks are deceiving on this one! Old fashioned hand scooped homemade ice cream or soft serve with many different toppings. You can also get the Italian ice with or without gelato which also comes in many flavors. Everything was delicious and perfectly made! 10 out of 10 on price and quality! Will definitely be coming back for more before they close for the season on October 5th
